If I go to Windows Explorer and click on WINDOWS the first 25 or more items
listed are something like this with different numbers ($NtUninstallKB837001$)
and then all have a sub-folder titled SPUNINST. My question is what are
these and are they needed? They all seem to have something to do with
Service Pack 2. Thanks...

Those are uninstall files for the various update patches installed
through windows update. The number portion refers to the knowledge base
article number for that update. If you are sure you won't need to
remove the update these can be deleted. I usually leave them for about
a month after installation. If no problems after that time I delete
them. After these uninstall files are deleted you can remove reference
to the respective update in add/remove programs. Just click on the
change/remove button. It will pop up with a message that it can't
uninstall the item, do you want to remove the reference. Click ok. Do
this only after you delete the uninstall folders. If you try this
before it will uninstall the update patch which is not what you want to do.

How can I save space after installing a Service Pack or other updates?

That's exactly what they are, SP2 updates. Do not uninstall them unless you
want
to uninstall SP2. You can delete the entries by either not listing hidden
files
or actually deleting the listing but not uninstalling them. If you run
Control
Panels Add or Remove Programs you'll also see some of these Hotfixes and
Service Pack 2 listed. If you don't want to see them anymore, although I do
not recommend it if you change your mind in the future, go here:
How to Manually Remove Programs from the Add or Remove Programs Tool

Those are there so you could *uninstall* the patches from Windows
Update. Each contains the files needed for the purpose - see
descriptions at http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;nnnnnn for
the fix contained in Windows\$NTUninstallQnnnnnn$ (or KBnnnnnn)

If you decide you will not want to uninstall a fix (and if all is
running smoothly you probably won't) then delete the folder. If you
then try in Add/remove, to Remove that one, it will fail, and you will
be offered the option of removing the entry there
