are there motherbords to old to support adding a usb 2.0 card

I tried to add one to a gateway performance pc and when XP booted up it
said hardware failure system halted - wouldn't even go to the operating
system - just got the bsod

No it's not a matter of age, probably some other
incompatibility. You might try the card in another slot but
if that doesn't help just return it and try a different USB
card. What chipset does it use? Most people prefer the NEC
chipped ones.
