Archiving/Removing prior calendar entries

Running Outlook 2007 and having an issue with archiving calendar entries for
the previous year. I've gone into File/Archive and selected the "Calendar"
folder. I specified to archive everything prior to 1/1/2009 and then run
it. It appears to be working and when it is finished I see that it has
created the archive as I named it. I then goto the "Folder List" and close
that new archive. I then restart Outlook and scroll back and all the
calendar items prior to that date I just archived still show. What gives?
I thought archiving then closing the archive would remove them out of my
current calendar. Is this not how archiving works? Help!

Can you check Tools | Options | Other and look at the autoarchive settings?
On my machine, I have it set to NOT permanently delete the items archived -
but you can control this setting here.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Under Tools | Options | Other the
autoarchive settings are:
-run every 14 days
-prompt before running
-delete expired items
-archive or delete old items
-show archive folder in folder list
-Default folder settings
--clean out items older than 12 months
--move old items to <path of archive>

Here are the autoarchive settings for the Calendar:
-archive this folder using these settings
--clean out items older than 2 months
--perm delete old items

I did those above settings to test if it actually deletes the old entries
which it doesn't. Evidentally I don't understand autoarchiving and it's
nuances.
