Is there a way to archive messages in Windows Mail like there is in Outlook?
I would prefer not to store them in the delete file forever. I liked the
Outlook featurn of automatically archiving periodically.

No.
Outlook if I recall archives emails to a seperate archive.pst file & Winmail
doesn't have that option.
You can create backup dirs of emails & drag & drop the emails you want to
archive from Winmail, then zip the backup dir up?
You can copy over as many emails in one go as you wish to save time.

Export to Microsoft Windows Mail.
You will be prompted for a folder to put them or can create one to put them.
After that, finish the export.

By Selecting "Selected Folders", this gives you the option to export to
separate folders on the hard drive(s).

Now, go to the folder in Windows Explorer.
Details should be the default view.
Add the "Title" or "Subject" column and you will see the subject lines of
the messages.
Add "Author" to the column to see who wrote it originally.

Now, you can use your CD\DVD mastering software to burn that folder to
CD\DVD

I too am searching for a way to archive, but I'm mostly concerned with my
Sent Items.

There is a setting to completely empty the Deleted Items folder upon Exit
from Windows Mail (like Outlook). Tools: Options: Advanced: Maintenance:
Empty messages from the Deleted Items folder upon Exit. Hope this helps some.

H iIsaac,

Could you clarify "You can create backup dirs of emails & drag & drop the
emails you want to archive from Winmail, then zip the backup dir up?" I get
the idea of crating a backup folder in Mail, but how do you then 'zip the
backup dir up'? I can not see any way to move (i.e. not copy) my cakup
folder to another location (like a exrernal drive)?

You can create a folder OUTSIDE of Windows Mail (in Windows Explorer) and
then drag and drop emails from Windows Mail into that folder. Then
right-click on the folder and choose "zip"...

Gordon thanks for your reply. That sort of worked in that it lets you drag
email messages (but not email folders) in to an explorer folder. But
unfortunately it still leaves the original messages in Micrsosoft Mail. I
really do not want to see these, in fact I really do not want to see many of
the old email folders I have.

I also think searching the archive would be hard as it looks like you can
only seach by title (not sender of receiver) or indeed search the body of the
messages for a key word? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Not really, other than to get Outlook. After all, WM is free, isn't it?

I am very computer illiterate hence me doing a computer course and one of the questions was about winmail archiving emails. Can you please tell me what dirs stand for in your explaination? Thanks in advance X

Dirs is an abbreviation for directories, which is an older word for
folders on your hard drive.

Hey, new at this so onlt know them as folders. Thanks for explaining what
they used to be called.

Many of us old-timers still call them that.
If nothing else, it distinguishes between folders that are internal to a program
like the mail folders in an email program, and the directories that represent
a storage location on the hard drive. Microsoft decided that distinction was
too difficult for the average user, so they began calling everything 'folders'.
I think that started with Windows 95.
