Archiving does not reduce size of outlook.pst file

Am I missing something? I have a rather large outlook.pst file (105Mb). So
I archived two large folders in my Personal folders (filled with older email
messages). An archive.pst file was formed in the place the instructions
said it would be. Since the newly created archive.pst was 85Mb in size, I
was expecting the outlook.pst to be fairly small now. Unfortunately, it
appears that it did not change the size of the outlook.pst file. Could
somebody explain this? Thanks.

It is mostly empty space.
Compact it!!!

What difference does it make? My Outlook archive is 758MB
