Applying SP4 to IBM6892

W

Wayne Watson

I'm trying to put W2K on an older PC, 500Mhz, 128M, IBM6982. I had no
problem installing for the CD by just booting up. However, when I try to do
this with the SP4, it doesn't recognize the CD. I looked at BIOS and see no
way to manipulate the CD to be looked at first. Comments?

Welcome to the Win2000 newsgroup . . .

Your message is a little unclear. Did you manage to install
Win2000? If so, what exactly do you mean with "When I try
to do this with the SP4"? What does "this" refer to? Please
be specific!

Install the service pack from within Windows.

Be sure to apply SP4 and these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

I ran into the same problem when I installed W2K. What I found somewhere on
MS Knowledge Base was this:

1. Open Registry
2. Locate key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

There are two Values LowerFilters and Upperfilters. Rename them (e.g.,
LowerFilters-INITIALS)
Reboot and see if you can access your CD.

I have problems with using CD-R on my current Windows 2000 ... it really
depends on your CD player. Mine is an HP NEC-ND3550AG.

Glad to be here. Yes, it was successfully installed. The SP4 CD will not
auto play. The PC ignores its existence.

The odd thing about this problem is that I know that I have done it before
without any fuss. I think the problem is with this particular PC, and, as
you suggest, probably with the CD player. It's sort of a funky PC that IBM
built back in 1998, I believe. It does work well, but seems like they were
trying to break new ground, not entirely successfully I would guess, with it.

For someone who is able to state his position on this globe with
great accuracy, your statements about your PC are delightfully
vague and ambiguous. When you write "The PC ignores its
existence", do you mean that you cannot see the CD in Windows
Explorer or do you mean only that it won't autoplay?

If it won't autoplay then you may have to kick-start it. Open
it with Explorer and look for a file with a .exe extension, perhaps
"win2ksp4.exe". Now double-click it!

I'm glad you are enjoying this. I do believe I tried your suggestion, but
I'll look again. Problem solved. Thank you for your attention.
