Applications Disappearing From Sys Folders

In the last few days, the calculator (calc.exe or
calculator.exe) has disappeared from its location on the
windows or systems folder. The shortcuts still exist but
after doing a search of all directories the application
was not found.

A few weeks ago, after seeing some performance
degradation, I ran several virus scans and spybot
programs and deleted several suspicious files. However,
either as a result of that, or subsequent to that, I
started seeing some other common applications disappear
(spider.exe, pinball.exe) that came with the system. I
had thouight that I had inadvertently deleted them, but I
KNOW I didn't delete calculator since I use it often.

Help is appreciated to keep things from getting worse and
hopefully restoring what I know (and don't know) what I'm
missing.

Spyware shouldn't be delete things. If you have no viruses then it is an odd problem. It's a single user machine and you're the only one using it? Maybe someone is just playing tricks on you

Best bet is to reformat the system and start from scratch. Install a new copy of an antivirus/firewall package such as Norton Internet Security or MacAfee Internet Security. Do regular backups either with Windows backup program or you can image the entire drive using Norton Ghost

Agree.
It is a single user system, so I don't expect any tricks.
I did look thru the trash folder, which hasn't been
cleared in some time, and didn't see any applications of
interest in there.
As far as reformatting the system, what options do I have
when I am on an unpartitioned disk, and the original
system folder came preloaded?

Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs, click Windows Components on
the left. Highlight accessories and click Details, and again. That
will have Calculator. If it is unchecked, click to check and OK to
reinstall it. If it *is* checked, click to uncheck; OK to uninstall the
belief that it is there, and then go back and reinstall it.
