Application will not start

I am unable to start some programs when I click on them. I get this error
message-"C:\Windows/system32/autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for
running MS-dos and Microsoft windows applications. Choose 'close'terminate
the application." Along the top of this error message it says "16 bit windows
subsystem". This was the error message I got before and after installing SP2.
I am running Windows XP PRO. I have also uninstalled the programs that are
getting this error message and reinstalled them to no availe.
