Application programs take forever to start up

Several times a day programs will not start up very slowly. They can take up
to ten minutes before they do. At the moment I have been waiting thirty
minutes for a task manager to start up and this is the longest I have waited
to date for a program start up. This includes task manager so I cannot
even start that up to see what might be hogging they system. This to applies
to programs that are installed in the program files directory as well as
windows system programs like control panel, task manager, etc. . I have a
few programs that were written long ago before the program files directroy
was used that start up immediately when this situation occurs. These
programs naturally did not use the regisry either. The only way I can
resolve this is to boot my system.

Since you suspect the registry, you can use Regmon to watch what's
going on http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Regmon.html just learn
to use the filters.

How about some background? When did this start? Was it a sudden onset or
gradual? If sudden what changes were made to the system right before the
problem started? Any software or hardware changes? Recent anti-virus
update? Does it happen in other accounts? How about in safe mode? What is
the malware status of the computer? Without knowing more do a thorough scan
for malware in safe mode. If the symptoms don't occur in safe mode do clean
boot troubleshooting.
