application layer gateway (alg.exe)

What is the application layer gateway in xp? Should I prevent it from
accessing the net? My firewall recommends against it. Please reply here or
to (e-mail address removed)
 
If you are using the built in firewall in xp you will
need this running. ALG is also nessary for sharing files
over the intrnet.
