Applet problem with IE6 - how do you uninstall applets?

D

David W.E. Roberts

Hi,

I am using a new(ish) XP home system.

I am having a problem with a web page - when I press a button I get an error
and the bottom left of the browser reports "Applet signer notinited".

Now I think the problem may be that I did not complete the installation of
an applet successfully - trying this on another browser I had two dialogue
boxes one after another to install the applet - so I am suspicious because
on this one I only had one dialogue box.

I have checked and I don't have the Microsoft Java VM but I do have the Sun
Java VM.

A java test page suggests that the Sun Java is working O.K for 1.0 and 1.1
Java.

The question stopping me now is:

"How do you tell which applets are installed for your browser, if they are
O.K., and how do you uninstall them?".

From time to time web pages ask you to accept applets e.g. Windows Update.

Where do they go,
how do you find them,
how do you remove them so you are prompted to install them next time you
visit a web site which requires them?

Sounds easy, but....

TIA

Sun Java console gives:

java.lang.ClassFormatError: com/govgateway/UKOnLineSigningApplet (Bad magic
number)

so it does look like a bad applet (spoiling the barrel...).

So how do I remove it?

If you are asking how to uninstall Java it should be in
add/remove programs.

No, I don't want to uninstall Java.

I want to remove a Java applet which has been installed by a website.

Where do I find a list of 3rd party Java applets installed on my PC?

How do I remove one or more of them?

TIA

Hmm...think I have found at least one location.

'C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files' contains "GGSecSign Class"

It also contains references to Office Update, JRE 1.4.2 and Shockwave Flash
Object.
No mention of Windows Update, though, so there must be other places.

A search on 'GGSec' located 'GGSecSig.dll' in 'C:\Windows\System32'.

I will delete these and see if the website re-downloads the applet.

Fortunately (assuming it works) a generic search for 'dll' files has turned
up the likely suspect because the name of the 'dll' is informative and one
entry was in an obvious place (Downloaded Program Files).

This still leaves the question 'how do you find Java applets' because there
are loads of 'dll' files and presumably a badly behaved installer could put
the class almost anywhere.

Hmm...just realised that all the entries in 'C:\Windows\Downloaded Program
Files' are ActiveX controls - but output still shows up in the Javas
console - so there is still Java involvement.

So additionally how do you search for ActiveX controls? There isn't a file
extension shown and I can't initially see an option in the Windows Explorer
search utility which can look for an object type such as an ActiveX control.

OTOH I think I found them with a search for the '.dll' file extension.....

Then again:

[Using the Command Prompt]

"C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files>dir
Volume in drive C is 53_02_41
Volume Serial Number is C00A-6847

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files

13/01/2004 14:37 551 ggsecsig.inf
22/08/2003 21:10 226 opuc.inf
08/12/2003 13:58 3,759 swflash.inf
3 File(s) 4,536 bytes"

So the command prompt sees only 3 files.

Windows Explorer sees 5 of something, including 3 references to JRE.

A search using Windows Explorer for '*.inf' does not show up these files.

A search using Windows Explorer for '*.dll' does show up these files.(!)

Can I please use something simple like Linux? :)

Basically something in Windows Explorer in the Win XP Home package is
interpreting the '*.inf' files as something else. So the presentation of the
folder contents is different using the 'dir' command and Windows Explorer.

Slightly further on, but much more confused.

Any help appreciated.

Well, curates egg.

The applet did download again, so it had been removed (albeit grudgingly -
XP threw a bit of a wobbler).
The installation seemed to create a lot of disc activity.

The applet shows the same problem as before, so it wasn't a faulty download.

From previous problems with this service I know that the applets used to
work only with MSJVM and not the SUN version, so I guess I now have to go
through the pain of installing MSJVM on my new XP Home system.
I have noted the instructions elsewhere in this NG :)

Bl**dy typical government web site though - build in a dependency on a
specific JVM shortly before MS removes the JVM from all new machines.

I may be a litttle unfair to them; we shall se if this works once the MSJVM
is installed.

However the applet downloads and works (or at least gets further) on my
Win2K sytem.

If this is a MSJVM problem then they are in deep doodoo as all new machines
ship without it :)

More later, no doubt.

Cheers
