Apple Laser Write Select, can I make it work on a PC?

Andy

Hi all.

Someone just gave me an Apple Laser Writer Select laser printer. I
was just wondering if I could make it work on my intel based system?
Is that even possible?
Thanks,
Andy

I'm not sure if it is an option since it is rather expensive but you could
try a program called pc-maclan. My advise would be to google for it, try it
and if you like it you can always purchase it.(or not_)

I have tried this and liked the program, just not enough to buy it and I
didn't realy need it anyway.

I have not found other software that maps appletalk/ethertalk printers to a
windows enviroment. Not even Basilisk-II (apple emulator) did the job for
me.
But if anyone has a suggestion I'm always open for it.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just stick with my Canon Inkjet
printer. I was pretty excited about getting a Laser printer, (never
had one before) but I know nothing about the printer, (no manual), and
nothing about Apple computers. Or is it worth trying to make it work?
Anyone know? I don't even know if it's a color laser, or just B&W?
Thanks again,
Andy

First of all, which LaserWriter Select is it? They made several different
versions, and one is PC compatible. The model number is on the logic board
back panel, where the connections are. I think they made Select 300, 310 and
360. I have several LW Select 360 motherboards, which would make yours PC
compatible. Yes, it's B&W.

Man, how many times have I heard this question :)

If I remember correctly, there were a couple of LaserWriter Selects. The
lower-end models were strictly QuickDraw printers, and will only work on
Mac's.

Some later one's though, such as the LaserWriter Select 360 were actually
cross-platform and you might be able to find drivers on Apple's web site.

We're really stretching the ol' brain cells here, though :)

Larry,
Sorry, I guess I should of used Google to see if this question has
been posted before, I assume it has once or twice? :) Anyway, thanks
for the reply. It happens to be a 360, and I've found some NT drivers
I hope will work with XP.
Thanks again!

on www.apple.com under support you will find one file with all the
drivers for all the apple printers which have a standard seiral port,
either net, or parallel part that will work on windows/DOS.

I have used these drivers to print to the Laser Writer IINTx, the
12/600 apple color laser printer, and the 360. These drivers I have
used to print to some old Postscript Tek printers (wax tranfer and
laser) with good results.

XP has built in drivers for the Apple Laserwriter Select 360. At least XP Pro
does.

Gordon,
Thanks for the info, I found the drivers and have it working. I am
having a print problem though. I have NO experience with Laser
printers, so maybe you can help if you see this and have some time.
The print is fine, but I am getting 3 (fairly random, they are in the
same general area) horizontal black lines across every page I print..
If there is text on that line they go over the text, but are not dark
enough to block out the text. Still, it renders the printer useless.
(was hoping to use it to print out small blueprints for work)
I've been checking on the net, and read that vertical lines could be
caused by a bad or dirty wire of some type, (forget what they called
it), or a bad toner cartridge. I haven't tried replacing it yet, but
have had it out. I haven't found anything about the horizontal lines
though.
I have no manual for it either, which isn't helping. I found a PDF
manual at the apple site, but it's all text, and it mostly for
installing drivers, and paper setup. It lacks any real
troubleshooting info. (no diagrams on how to clean the toner, etc)
If there is a fairly good chance a new toner cartridge would fix the
problem, I'd get one tomorrow.
Many thanks,
Andy

Why would you have had any problem whatsoever in finding support for
this printer? Every version of Windows from '95 through XP ships with
a driver for it. It's a standard Level 2 Postscript printer.

The Select 360 doesn't have a corona wire. Replace the toner
cartridge.

Clean the toner?

I didn't know that. I never had a laser printer before, let alone an
Apple. I had no idea how old it was, or if it had cross platform
support.
Replace the toner cartridge.

Thank you. I wasn't sure what was causing the vertical lines. I have
a cartridge on order, and should have it by Monday. Thanks again for
you input, much appreciated!
