apostrophes and quotes are being replaced

In Outlook, apostrophes and quotation marks are being replaced with squares
after I send a message. The message in my "Sent" folder shows the
apostrophes and quotations. However, others receive the message with squares
in their place.

Any ideas what is going on and how to fix it?

I have the problem, but it’s intermittent.

The “little squares†only show up on replies back to me from SBC/Yahoo and
Yahoo users who reply from the SBC or Yahoo web sites. This is the sequence
of events that occur when I see the squares:

1. Outlook sender generates email.
2. SBC/Yahoo recipient reads email on web site and all punctuation looks fine.
3. SBC/Yahoo recipient responds to email from web site.
4. Outlook sender reads email reply and all of the apostrophes/quotes now
look like squares, but ONLY in the sender’s original email. Any
apostrophes/quotes used by the recipient in the reply are fine.
5. Sender replies to the reply and SBC/Yahoo recipient now sees the squares
from the original email in STEP 1.

Is your problem different and/or more widespread than that?

I hadn't noticed the SBCGlobal connection. I have not observed the Yahoo one
yet. But, in looking at the most recent emails with this - the common thread
is SBCGlobal addresses. And it does appear intermittent, but irritating. I
might hit SBC Global and see what they say.

Eureka!

Here's what I did to fix my problem:

1. Open Word and go to Tools>AutoCorrect Options
2. Go to "AutoFormat" tab and CLEAR "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes"
3. Go to "AutoFormat As You Type" tab and CLEAR "Straight quotes" with
"smart quotes"


To other interested readers…

I'm not at all technical (or bright!) enough to understand why this worked,
but here's what I know…

My problem with the squares was limited to WEB SITE replies from
SBCGlobalYahoo and Yahoo users, which appear to be in US-ASCII. Anyway, it
would seem that the web email program for Yahoo was not correctly
interpreting whatever "smart quotes" are. Then when that interpretation was
returned to Outlook as part of the reply, the Word reader was replacing the
quotes with "little squares".

When I CLEARED the options listed above, the responses to any new emails
sent to these sites no longer contained squares.

I'll also add that I do NOT have Spamfighter for Outlook. I bring this up
only because the removal of the free version of Spamfighter has been
mentioned in other threads as a solution to this problem.

Maverick, please let us know if this solution works or not for you.

I did as instructed but i still get 0 instead of apostrophes and quotation
marks. I only receive thes errors from chicken soup for the soul messages.
Any one else have a solution?
