Looks like the certificates don't jibe as your browser has warned.
Instead of activevirusshield.com the cert of the page has free.aol.com
listed. You have have the option of ignoring the warning, don't you? I
mean it's not as you claim .... you should actually be able to proceed
if you wish.

It's a wonder that the site hasn't been fixed for this issue by now. I
seem to remember running into the same thing back when I started with
AVS. If you're worried about it, contact the site admin and complain.

Well, I did click on to "Continue...not recommended" and still wasn't able
to proceed with downloading as the same page reappeared again and again;
hence my post to this group. So I tried one more time, ignoring the
warning, and am happy to report that downloading/installing went flawless.
But during updating the protection files there is an error noted in the
Event log: 'File downloading error: internal error (0x80000040), Object
name: black.lst'. I wonder if there is something I should do to rectify
this error?
I disabled the 'Mail Anti-Virus' task which is recommended by so many
n/group contributors.

name: black.lst'. I wonder if there is something I should do to rectify
this error?

That file is connected with Kaspersky's black listing of illegal keys
.... apparently part of a method Kaspersky uses to protect Kaspersky.

If the error is consistent and you can't wind up with a "Updating
Completed Successfully" type of message, you obviously have a problem
that requires fixing. Maybe it's due to your not following the
instructions on adding the key file you were sent? Otherwise, you'll
have to use the Support/Help/Forums since I don't have a clue

I Googled the phrase internal error black.lst and I see the problem
mentioned here and there but with no real clues other than maybe
some users with XP 64 experiencing the problem. But the possible
reasons/solutions weren't clear to me. It seems to be important to
use default install folders. My black.lst file (Win 2K) is with all
the other data bases in:
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\AVP6\Bases

I disabled the 'Mail Anti-Virus' task which is recommended by so many
n/group contributors.

The reason is that too many users trust scanners rather than using
their heads and simply deleting all unsolicited attackments.

After a couple of updates the black.lst file is now current and everything
is A1 Okay! I am very happy with this application.

I'm glad to hear that.

Here's a couple of config tips for experienced users:

Since I sometimes handle malware, I can't have a realtime av
underfoot complaining about it. With AVS, disabling both email
and file scan modules disables this realtime or background scanning
but it doesn't interfere with on-demand scans of folders or Critical
Areas. To get AVS further out of the way so it doesn't even appear
on the toolbar, you can use MSCONFIG to block it from starting up
when Windows starts. Win 2K users can download the XP version of
MSCONFIG here:

You use the Startup tab and uncheck avp.

I leave updating on auto, so whenever I invoke AVS from the desktop
icon, it auto updates before I do a on-demand scan.

Used in this way, I've also been able to install certain other av for
eval purposes without having to first uninstall AVS. I've been able
to install/uninstall Avira and Bit Defender, for example, with AVS
installed.
