Now that my friend has high speed internet and Win XP she
wants to quit AOL and start using Outlook Express. Is it
possible to transfer her address book contacts, if so
how? Thank you for any help.

To import an address book from another program

You can import address book contacts from other Windows
Address Book files (.wab), as well as from Netscape
Communicator, Microsoft Exchange Personal Address Book,
or any text (.csv) file.

For Windows Address Book files:

In Address Book, on the File menu, point to Import, and
then click Address Book (WAB).
Locate and select the address book you want to import,
and then click Open.
For all other address book formats:

In the Address Book, on the File menu, point to Import,
and then click Other Address Book.
Click the address book or file type you want to import,
and then click Import.
If your address book is not listed, you can export it to
either a text (.csv) file or an LDIF (LDAP Directory
Interchange Format) file, and then import it using that
file type.

And NONE of that is any help whatsoever for someone with AOL. .

AOL & CompuServe both use proprietary formats for their
datastores for addresses and mail. It is a real pain to try and
migrate data from them (AOL,etc) to other email clients.

The best tool is a program called ForMorph
http://www.fkeeps.com/fmorph/fmindex.htm

I haven't "Googled" to see if someone has created a free
utility to handle the translation - but it might be worth a search
or two. Since Broadband and the loss of 100,000 subscribers
a month there might be new tools for the AOL'ers moving on
to other providers.

The only way I have done it was put all the addresses in an AOL email in the
send to box. Open the AOL Address Book and double click on each name and it
will go to the Send To box.

Then cut and paste them from there to the body of the email. Address the
email to your new email address. Open it from there and copy and paste the
email addresses into the new Address Book. It may take awhile but beats
trying to type them all in.
