popped up yesterday
Kb51847 Net framework 3.5 sp1 and net framework 3.5 family
I did it on 3 machines- this is huge and it takes forever to install once it
downloads so be prepared to sit (this happened on all 3 machines running xp
pro sp3)

why would Microsoft not just include it with tuesdays security updates?

Yes, Robin, my "gold shield" appeared on my XP:SP3 machines to update the
..net framework...super large and a very long install, but went smoothly
nonetheless...restart required as you well know.

Yes - installed it on two home pc's and a laptop yesterday - everything went fine. It is fairly large and takes some time, but no problems.

Yes, Robin - all three pc's are running XP SP3 Home Edition - all up to
date.

I got the update yesterday, and no problems. (But there are *many*
problems reported all over the Internet!)

However, I do have troubles understanding what that update is? 951847
has been issued and installed a long time ago, and it even had two
updates (953595, 958484) since. KB951847
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958484) has last been updated in August
2008 - so I really don't understand what that yesterday's update was.

I'm seeing it on XP and Server 2003 machines. On servers it is large-248
megs, and in one case took a full half hour to install after the download.

I have one machine I can't get it installed on, but I'm progressing in
troubleshooting that.

There's also a SQL Server or SQL Server Express update on some machines with
that installed which I'm having a bit of trouble with.

I'm glad these did NOT come with the security updates--they are large, and
somewhat problematical--better to get them out of the way before stuff that
is really critical comes out.

so many do not realize it can take up to a half hr to install this one and I
think what happens they cancel it then cry "why did it not install"
You really need patience with this one!

On Vista and WIndows 7, one or the other of those updates installs on
shutdown, without clearly stating that as far as I can see--and it takes a
LONG time to do that install.

Hmm... I have been offered it on XP Pro, but /not/ on Vista.
(I have declined the XP offer, as I only use .Net 2.0 (with SP1), I do
not see why I should 'load up' all the way to 3.5).

windows 7 has not asked me to do the update- but I am running in virtual pc
and virtual box, I am wondering if that makes a difference

on some computers it is not being offered as a critical security update and
you will not see it in the shield
you will see it on Windows Updates in "software updates"
so look there

This appears to be an update to .net 2...

It is possible that I'm getting the SQL update mixed up with the .net one--I
think the one I am having trouble with on Windows 7 is the SQL express
update---but it is hard to tell--I left the laptop shutting down on my desk
at work Thursday, and haven't been back. Last I checked it was still
"shutting down..."

I think the one I'm seeing on 7 is the SQL server 2005 express update--but
in both cases, it will depend on what software you have installed--you won't
see this on every box.
