Try this:

Right click on the sound icon in the system tray
choose sounds
in the dialog that displays, check to see it the option "Play Windows
Startup sound" (on the sounds tab) is checked.

Does that help?

Click Start > type "Sound" click it to Open
Click Sound (tab)
Under Program Events: make sure "Play Windows Startup sound" is checked.

yes, it's on(the play windows.....) but usually when i logged on there was
sound not anymore, fortunatly it's not a big problem so i don't mind living
with, but i was wandering if it was a recent update that did this cuz i
believe it happened at the same time, but i can't remember which update

Run the System File Checker command:
Open the Run command (Win key + R)
sfc /scannow

If that does not work, try doing a System Repair with your Windows Vista DVD

You will see on the Vista logo setup screen after lang. options in the
lower left corner, a link called "System Recovery Options

Select your OS for repair.

Click Startup Repair

Something like it, yes. I've chosen another sound (WAV file) to play on
start, but it doesn't unless I log on as Administrator.
Right now I'm VEEEERY annoyed because the freaky UAC severed my video
capture process, leaving only sound to be captured after that desktop
deactivation it does (or whatever it's name - that thing when the screen
goes black and I'm prompted for allowing something to run). This UAC
behaviour is FAR MORE intrusive than I expected, disrupting that otherwise
legit process that uses the little old DirectX. I WANT THE UAC REPROGRAMMED,
HEAR ME, MICROSOFT ?

i'm usure of the result when i click ok after entering the comand a cmd
prompt came up and disapeer but nothing else.
