Dave

A friend of mine has bought a PC from TINY computers here in the UK....

Now a problem has arose already.......she has an internet set up from her
previous computer and wants to continue using her "old" ISP..i.e.
Blueyonder..

BUT...

Her new PC has been pre installed with TINY's own
software.....called.....Supanet Internet Access , she is trying to remove
this from her pc but doesnt really know how to do it.

Can anyone, explain in simple English how to do it.......

Also.....i thought that when you bought a PC which had Windows on it that
you would be provided with some sort of rescue cd to re-install in the case
of an emargency, but no, NOT TINY.....thay charged her £40 for the cd.

Is this the norm these days?

Many thanks

Dave :)

If she wants to continue with her previous isp i think i am right in
saying that she will need to also buy another modem, as the ones fitted
into Tiny pc's are locked to only work with supanet.

HUH?! That's complete bollocks! You cannot tie a modem to a particular ISP!

Thx

Dave,

Ignore what Darren said - it is IMPOSSIBLE to tie a modem to a particular
ISP. You CANNOT hard code a particular ISP's number into a modem.

Having said that your friend should have done her homework before purchasing
overpriced junk.

A PC manufacturer as to provide some means of restoring the system to
it's original state. That can be one of three ways:

1. Windows installation CD and CDs for installing any needed drivers.

2. Rescue CD

3. Hidden partition on the hard drive.

She needs to contact Tiny tech support to find out which one it is.

If she has the original CD she got when she joined up with BlueYonder
she should run it, and it will set up the connection to them again; if
she does not, I suggest going to their site and there should be a means
of 'joining up' that may not be quite as slick. She will need to check
out the username, password that she has been used to before so as to use
them again.

Once that new connection is up and working (which will have taken over
almost all settings), she can go to Control Panel - Network Connections
and simply highlight and delete the Supanet one, and delete any shortcut
to it on the desktop

All they are *required* to do is to provide some means of restoring the
machine to ex-factory state, which they may have done by means of files
hidden on the hard disk. It has to be said that Tiny, while it has
quite good specs, is very much a corner cutting maker, especially on
support

Ah, Computer Active, the computer magazine for preschoolers. All they need is
to give away a free Teletubbies CD. My mother could write for them - they
know as much about computers as I do about quantum mechanics! You *CANNOT*
hard code a number into a modem so it will only work with one ISP. Now take
advice from someone who knows a tad more than you do, OK? If the PC was
wiped, and a generic version of Windows installed, the modem would dial up
any ISP of your choosing - it's software /not/ hardware.

As you said above it's software /not/ hardware, that is why that link i
gave also tells you how to remove said software so that you can dial any
isp. Why i mentioned buying a new modem is also covered in the link, it
is easier to disable the onboard modem and fit a new one, than it is to
kill the software as alot of problems are encountered this way.

Actually you can tie a modem to a particular ISP by hacking the
firmware. Conexant have been doing it in South America for years.
Time/Tiny are just using a registry hack at present but have toyed
with the idea of hardwiring the firmware. At present all you need to
do to free the modem is install the generic Conexant HSF drivers
