Any Way To Enable RPC Service in W2K Via Command Line?

S

shneor

I seem to have accidentally disabled the RPC service as well as the
Routing and Remote Access service,. Is there any way to enable these
from the command line? I can no longer do anything to enable a disabled
service through the usual Services GUI.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Shneor

From the recovery console command prompt;

enable rpcss service_auto_start
enable rpclocator service_demand_start

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks. At
the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows 2000
installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

Then use the services.msc to set the rquired startup type for the 'Routing
and Remote Access' service.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your detailed response.
When I try to enter the recovery console via the W2K setup cd, I get a
message that is apparently looking for a CD driver. I actually used a
file copied from another computer on a floppy, but then it asked for a
second file...which was too large to fit on a floppy. That was a couple
of months ago, and I ended up reinstalling, which wiped out a number of
items (outlook e-mail and archives, for example). I'd prefer to avoid
that route, if at all possible.

Of course, I neglected to keep the filenames; I could move them to
%windir% if I knew where they were (as my search does not work either).

Thanks again,

Shneor

Dave,
Thank you VERY MUCH once again. It worked. I never realized just how
important RPC is in Windows.

Now I'm going to install the recovery console.

Gratefully,
Shneor
