It takes at least three reboots to rebuild Prefetch.

rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks will rebuild the
%windir%\Prefetch\layout.ini file.

If for some reason layout.ini (%windir%\Prefetch\layout.ini) does not get
recreated after three boots, try this:
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK
Type or paste the following line:

rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

Hit Enter and let it run.

The layout.ini should be rebuilt.

Normally you do not want to delete the layout.ini.

I have disabled prefetching and my layout.ini has just two lines:

I just dragged my two line, 66 bytes layout.ini from %windir%\Prefetch to
the Desktop.

I started the Task Scheduler service that I had disabled.

I ran Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks from a command prompt.

It ran for about five minutes.

A new layout.ini was recreated in %windir%\Prefetch. Along with a few *.pf
files.

The new layout.ini has 1252 lines and is 150 KB.

I disabled the Task Scheduler service and everything in %windir%\Prefetch.

I dragged my two line, 66 bytes layout.ini from the Desktop back to
%windir%\Prefetch.

Prefetch is now turned OFF for me again.

I got tired of seeing this kind of crap in the layout.ini:

Hmmm, prefetch got me curious, went to the folder and it is completely empty! Went to the Help and Support section (start button)
and looked-up 'prefetch'; it returned ZERO hits. OK.

Would someone please tell me how to turn prefetch on and off (BTW, I've rebooted about a dozen times and there are still no files
there, hidden files are viewable)?

Thanks,
Vic

If no files in %windir%\Prefetch or C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch.

Do you have some sort of a utility like Windows XP Prefetch Clean And
Control, Download Cleanup, Clean Prefetch.bat, Security CD Scanning Script
v1.01 or TuneXP that cleans out the Prefetch folder?

Are these services set to Automatic and running?
System Event Notification
Task Scheduler

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click System Event Notification |
Under Startup type make sure it's set to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When it starts click OK

Scroll down to and double click Task Scheduler |
Under Startup type make sure it's set to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When it starts click OK

Close Services.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management\PrefetchParameters

Look for EnablePrefetcher in the right pane, if the value is not 3,
Double click EnablePrefetcher and change the value to 3.

Exit regedit

This will take effect on next reboot.
It will take three boots to rebuild the Prefetch file.

If for some reason layout.ini {C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\layout.ini} does not get
recreated after three boots, try this:
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Clcik OK |

Type or paste this in:

rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

Hit Enter and let it run.

The layout.ini should be rebuilt.

Open regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
In the right hand pane, OptimizeComplete does it say Yes?

If not...
Set the LcnStartLocation to 0 (zero) and the LcnEndLocation to 0 (zero)

Run
rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
again.

Or run defrag c: -boot if Windows is on the C: drive.

You can force a boot optimization by doing the following:
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
Type or paste this in:

defrag c: -boot

Hit Enter

This time running defrag may take longer.

Again open regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
OptimizeComplete Yes?
LcnStartLocation
LcnEndLocation

Have the values changed from 0?

I have in fact used TuneXP

Are these services set to Automatic and running?
System Event Notification
Task Scheduler

Task Scheduler will not run, keeps coming up with error 87, incorrect start parameter. As I ran through your post the horror of what
may have been my mistake has come to mind. Using a registry cleaner may have removed entries thus causing this problem. I've looked
and looked for a backup to restore but to no avail. No restore points go back far enough. It should not be a big thing though as I
Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click System Event Notification |
Under Startup type make sure it's set to Automatic | Click Apply |

registry entries RE prefetcher look OK
Exit regedit

recreated after three boots, try this:

rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

tried this. nothing happens (probably because task scheduler will NOT start)

Hit Enter and let it run.

The layout.ini should be rebuilt.

Open regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
In the right hand pane, OptimizeComplete does it say Yes?

believe it of not, this will not work either. I can defrag starting the GUI for defrag though

This time running defrag may take longer.

Again open regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
OptimizeComplete Yes?
LcnStartLocation
LcnEndLocation

Have the values changed from 0?

registry says OptimizeComplete NO
also says OptimizeError MISSING REGISTRY ENTRIES (- bingo -)

Well, unless you have a rabbit you can pull out of your hat it looks like I may have to reinstall and avoid RegHealer.

Thanks again, you have been very helpful!

Vic, let's start with the Task Scheduler service (its Display name).

Schedule is the service name.

You're using Outlook Express 5.50.4942.400?? and not 6.0??

Anyway.

Let's see what's in your registry for Schedule.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule

Right click on the Schedule folder in the left hand pane and click: Export.
When the Export Registry File dialog opens, click the Desktop, top left.
Type: sched in the File name box.
Next to Save as type, click the V and select: Text Files (*.txt).
Click the Save button.
Close regedit.

Locate sched.txt on your desktop, open it, copy everything and paste into a
message and post back.

We'll see if there is anything obvious.

How many times does this deleted crap need to come back and haunt a
person?

It takes at least three reboots to rebuild Prefetch.

rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks will rebuild the
%windir%\Prefetch\layout.ini file.

If for some reason layout.ini (%windir%\Prefetch\layout.ini) does not
get recreated after three boots, try this:
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK
Type or paste the following line:

rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

Hit Enter and let it run.

The layout.ini should be rebuilt.

Normally you do not want to delete the layout.ini.

I have disabled prefetching and my layout.ini has just two lines:

[OptimalLayoutFile]
Version=1

Hi ... I'm curious if there is any truth to this statement that I
read from this forum site ? Its about the perfetch folder , that you
shouldn't
delete the layout file

I am posting this again. I just saw it disappear before my eyes.

Hi Wesley

Sorry to respond to your reply so late. The prefetch issue along with others causing yellow and red flagged items within the
reporting system caused me to reinstall. Probably started just before your reply. But thanks again. Your help is valuable!

Just to follow-up, the system is reinstalled and working well. No yellow or red flags. Performance is good. There is certainly a
good learning curve coming from Win9x to XP! The reason you see OE 5.5 is because Win95, 98se are still installed (multi-boot
system). and the message was written while in 98 probably (not upgraded to IE6).

There are questions I need to ask re: networking, which seems to me to be the hardest to understand and configure of all XP's
functions I run into thus far so it's off to networking newsgroups.

Thanks again!
Vic

Apparently it never all really goes away, regardless of the
search-and-destroy methods used. Check out this website (the discussion
is dated 2001, but probably still essentially valid in XP):
