Any sense in using 64 bit vista, if on 2gb ram machine?

Hi,

I recently bought a new computer (core 2 duo, 2.13 ghz, 2gb ram, vista
premium). Included with the pc were two vista disks, one 32 bit another 64.

I just deleted the pre-installed 32 bit version, and installed the 64 bit
version. To my surprise, all third party programs work so far.

But I noticed somewhat heavy swapping sometimes, why is that on a 2gb ram
system? The system ist a clean install. Is it due 64 bit? Does it take more
ram?

Oh and: Is there even a point in using the 64 bit edition on a pc that only
has 2 gb ram? Since the primary reason for 64 bit is to access over 4
gigabyte of ram.. are there other benefits than that?

I would say unless you have a need or a plan to go to 4GB or greater, then
there isn't a real need for 64bit for 99% of the people. Granted, it might
be the future, but it's a future that's still a few years away. I run a
multiboot and I don't see much difference between the V64 and V32, so in one
regards I would say, it doesn't seem to hurt on the other I would say, it
doesn't seem to help anything

I'm running V64 with 2GB and I don't notice much by way of the swapfile
getting hit, are you sure that is what's going on ? If you have the ability
to run dual monitors then you could run the resource monitor on the one
monitor while you do your normal stuff on the other, you could then look and
see what all the disk activity is.

It might not be swapping at all (and I would expect not), it might be the
search indexer, Superfetch, windows defender and other activities.
Obviously, you could do this with one monitor, having two, just makes it
easier

On a side note, like you most everything I have works under Vista 64. I had
to upgrade to a newer IDE\Sata controller, because at the time Promise
wasn't offering a 64bit driver for the one I had. And the Logitech G15
keyboard works fine, except for an error about the Media Display applet. The
only app that doesn't work and is important is the VPN software I use for
work. The beta version they have out for testing is only 32bit and will not
install on my V64. I'm waiting to see if my company is going to release a
64bit flavor.

Not unless you need to run 64-bit software...
Since the primary reason for 64 bit is to access over 4
gigabyte of ram

The primary reason for a 64-bit operating system is to run 64-bit software -
the > 4Gb RAM thing is merely mathematics...

Here's some good info on Vista 64 bit...
