I bought an HL-5140 last month when my LaserJet III crapped out (after
twelve years). I don't do a lot of printing anymore, probably only 100-200
pages a month, if that, so this new printer isn't going to get worked very
hard.
Mostly I like it. It's somewhat noisier while printing than the LJIII was,
but the 5140 shuts itself down after a few minutes whereas the LJIII had
constant fan noise.
I'm using a 24 lb Staples brand paper with no feed problems so far.
Manually feeding pre-printed check forms has been my only real problem. I
print three up, wallet style checks with Quicken and I've wasted several
pages of checks because they've fed crookedly.
I measured the beginning of a 3" long string of asterisks on one check at
1-1/16" from the top edge of the check, but by the end of the line, the
asterisks were 3/16" lower. That's a very noticeable and unacceptable
slant, I think. If I'm very careful they'll print all right, but sometimes
this means pulling the checks out of the manual feed slot and feeding them
in again 2-3 times.
