Any dual channel memory experts out there?

Sorry to ask a non XP question but I can't find the answer anywwhere.

I am running XP SP3 and have a motherboard with 2 pairs of DDR2 memory
slots. One pair has 2x1Gb of DDR2 PC6400 memory sticks running in dual
channel mode.

I have a spare single stick of 1Gb memory - if I puy it in one of the 2
spare slots will it slow down the existing dual channel memory or can I
assume I will get the first 2Gb of memory using the fast 2Gb of dual channel
memory and only use the extra memory when needed?
