I now use Zone Alarm Pro and I am very pleased with it. I used the free
version of Zone Alarm for over a year and I had no problems with it all.
Try ZA and see if you like it. www.zonelabs.com

I have been using the free version of AVG antivirus for
about a year now and it has worked great. I believe the
website is grisoft.com, or just do a search for AVG
antivirus

The problem with questions asking about the "best" anything is
that they garner opinions, not answers. And since you get a rash
of different opinions, you typically end up as confused as you
did before,

That said, here's my opinion: I like Norton Anti-Virus.

My apologies. I missed that you asked specifically about "free"
anti-virus programs, so my recommendation of NAV isn't really
responsive. I have no experience with any of the free products.

I think if you have to have "free", then most people use AVG from
Grisoft, and that's what I install for clients. But I'm with Mr. Blake
on this one: I think Norton AV is the best av for Windows and well
worth the $50. Quite often you'll find it in stores with a $20 rebate
on the box, which brings down the cost to far less than what you'd pay
for someone like me to fix your computer after it was infected and
messed up from all the viruses!

Happy Holidays,

Malke
