Does anyone know of such a beast? The scenario I have is that my wife
has a laptop supplied by her company (XP Pro - not sure whether it's
SP2, although I rather suspect not). It is running like a bag of nails
and I suspect malware or spyware. However, the IT dept is so pathetic
(they couldn't even tell one of my wife's reps how to stop the blaster
worm from shutting down the computer long enough for her to get the
patch - I had to do that!)that I need to use some sort of application
that doesn't actually get installed on the machine.

Any Ideas?

Then, there is an antivirus called F-Prot which can be started from floppies. Here are the link:
http://www.vsantivirus.com/fprot-disq.htm
but it's in spanish. If you don't read spanish please tell me and I'll translate it.

It's not antivirus I'm after - it's spyware and malware, like Spybot and
Ad-Aware but which run without installing on the machine.

But then you cannot start Windows?? If you suspect Blaster, take into account that this is a virus not spyware.

You can install Lavasoft Adaware on a PC and update it. Then you can copy its installation
directory tree to another disk and run it off that disk. I do that with a ZIP disk.
Adaware is non-invasive and can run stand-alone.

F-Prot is anti virus not anti spyware which is non-viral malware.

Why not installed on the machine? If "company policy,"

1. Install what you need, clean, remove them.
2. Use Micros~1's new spyware monitor/cleaner (it's in beta). Tell the IT
people it's genuine MS stuff.

Because this IT dept has the disease most IT depts have - they think
they know it all and no-one outside knows anything, when certainly with
*this* IT dept, it's the other way around!

Example - we have had broadband in our village now for 2 months. My wife
works from home a great deal accessing the company database. I suggested
we get broadband, and put in a router (we have two laptops and a
desktop). Shriek Horror! That might mean our network and data might be
compromised! Oh no, we'll put in a SEPARATE phone so my wife can access
our network independently. (This in Dec 2004). Engineer comes last week,
can't put in a separate line, no spare lines. Could DAX two others or
put in a new line from exchange. Can't DAX lines, and as the new line is
a Vodaphone line, they won't put in a new line from the Exchange. Too
expensive. So, two months after, we get......yes you guessed it,..... a
ROUTER! Sheeeesh! It's only delayed our broadband by about THREE
months....F'ing IT depts.

Hi Gordon - If I understand your issues, then an on-line scan might serve
your purposes. Such scans won't necessarily clean anything, but they can at
least probably identify which specific parasites are involved and give you
some ammunition with which to take on your IT dept to get some decent
malware cleaners installed:

There are on-line parasite scans available here:
http://www.my-etrust.com/products/pestscan/pestscan.cfm
http://www.webroot.com/services/spyaudit_03.htm
and here: http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/parasite.htm (NOTE: You will need to disable Ad
Blocking in Zone Alarm 3.x or later, if present or any other Ad Blocking
software which interferes with Java Scripting for this scan to work on these
last two sites. You should get a message between the two lines of ****
giving the results of the scan.)

Thanks - yes I'd thought about that - it's just a question of getting
her to do it. It's reasonably academic now anyway as there is a NEW
laptop under the table just awaiting Broadband....(see my reply to
JerryMouse......)

Hi Gordon - OK, that'll work too! :) If you can, you might want to have
her implement some of the preventive measures I've outlined in my Blog,
Defending Your Machine, here: http://defendingyourmachine.blogspot.com/ to
see if she can avoid some of this stuff on the new machine.

I believe this is small enough to put on a floppy, unfortunatlly the malware
scanner part of the program only works if you buy it.

Take a look at http://www.ubcd4win.com/

Build this cd, boot from it and run adaware off of it. It should
probably be in any techs arsenal of tools.
