ANTI-SPYWARE FOR WINDOWS 98

G

GAIL GIBBS

DEAR SIRS,
I HAVE BEEN USING NETSCAPE BROWSER, ONLY BECAUSE MY
INTERNET EXPLORER HAS CONTINUOUS POP UP OF PORNO ETC.
CONSTANTLY INTERUPTING MY SESSIONS SUCH AS BANKING ETC.
I WAS ADVISED TO RELOAD WINDOWS AND THIS HAS NOT FIXED MY
PROBLEM. ALSO I HAVE BEEN RUNNING SPYBOT AND NORTON
ANTI-VIRUS FREQUENTLY WITH NO CHANGE. I USE LIVE-UPDATE
ONCE A WEEK TO KEEP ABREAST, BUT OBVIOUSLY THIS HASN'T HELPED

WHY CAN'T I GET A FREE SPYWARE AND ANTI-VIRUS UPDATE FROM
MICROSOFT FOR MY WINDOW'S 98.
I AM QUITE SATISFIED WITH THIS VERSION AND DON'T SEE WHY
I NEED TO UPDATE MY SOFTWARE IN THIS INSTANCE.

OCCASSIONALLY I TRY INTERNET EXPLORER AGAIN AND NO
CHANGE WITH POP UPS, ETC. ALSO WHEN RESTARTING MY COMPUTOR
IT TAKES 15 MINUTES TO JUST HAVE THE ICONS APPEAR ON THE
SCREEN. I AM GETTING VERY FRUSTRATED WITH THE WHOLE
WINDOWS IDEA AND CONTEMPLATING GETTING RID OF MY COMPUTOR
SINCE IT TAKES FOREVER TO GET ANYTHING DONE AND ALL I SEEN
TO BE ABLE TO ENJOY IS PLAYING GAMES ON IT, SINCE THERE ARE
NOT ANY POP UPS, EVEN THOUGH THE PLAY IS STILL SLOW. ALSO
I DO ALL MY BANKING AND BILL PAYMENTS ON THE INTERNET, SO
THIS IS A GREAT DILEMMA.
I PREFERRED THE INTERNET EXPLORER BROWSER BECAUSE I AM
FAMILIAR WITH ALL THE AREAS, BUT I GUESS I'LL HAVE TO GET
USED TO NETSCAPE.
PS: I'V HAD MY COMPUTOR IN TO BE FIXED MULTIPLE TIMES IN
THE LAST YEAR , AND APPARENTLY IT ALL STEMS FROM INTERNET
EXPLORER. WHEN I FIRTS USE THE COMPUTOR AFTER BEING FIXED,
IT RUNS FINE.
THEN I TRY TO RUN INTERNET EXPLORER AND ALL THE PROBLEMS
COME BACK.

ANY HELP WITH THIS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

Gail;
Microsoft made the decision not to support older operating systems with this
new program.
I am not sure if the former owner had similar plans.
You will need to find 3rd party alternatives or plan on upgrading.

Please take your other issues to a Windows 98 newsgroup where they can be
better addressed:

Also, please do not use ALL CAPS in newsgroups.
ALL CAPS is considered shouting and rude.

Your best bet would be Webroot's SpySweeper. It's very
thorough. You can try it for free at www.webroot.com.
Unfortunately, to get updates beyond your first one, you
need to buy it. I find it is more thorough than AdAware
SE and Spybot 1.3. Although, I have found that the more
tools I run, the cleaner, and faster my machine runs.

SpySweeper with the shields turned on will protect you
nicely, although the popups asking you to allow an action
or block an action are somewhat annoying.

Spybot also has an add-in caled Tea-Timer/SDresident that
perform a similar function to SpySweeper shields.

It boils down to what works best for you.

I have been trying MS AS and it seems to be working ok for
me, but as it seems to have some bugs - I would suggest
running Lavasoft's Adaware and Spybot S&D (both can be
found on download.com). They each seem to catch things the
other doesn't. If you have any new toolbars, try
cwshredder, also. I personally use the Mozilla Firefox
browser because I like it better than IE, but if you
really want to stick with IE, you need to change your
internet settings to not download ActiveX controls, this
will keep you from getting new stuff.

1stly you should get the lastest verison of norton anti-
virus, which will scan your computer for adaware as well
as viruses, secondly download the google tool bar that
will block your popups in internet explorer, and thirdly
download these two programs that have worked wonders for
me, and here are the links to where u can download them.

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-
8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-1

BE SURE TO KEEP THE UPDATED AND SCAN YOUR COMPUTER
OFTEN.
but even though i have just installed this new
antispyware beta version, it has found new traces of
spyware on my computer that the other two didnt.

on my recommendation list this is at the top
