Another WINXP booting problem

J

John Lowe

Have reistalled WINXP for 2nd time and have few progs installed. PC still
hates starting up first thing in morning when switched on. Several goes
....loads splash screen but then goes blank. Reset and hit "start Windows
normally" and after two or three tries at this it finally starts up. Is this
a hardware issue...maybe the graphics card? Possibly a component that needs
to have warmed up. Had a new PSU very recently but that hasn't fixed it.
Checked SDRAM by taking out each of 3 modules and tried individually. They
seem ok. Could it be drivers?

Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks.....John Lowe UK

Hi

Disconnect all hardware apart from the graphics card, mouse and keyboard.
See if you get the same problem then.

You are incorrect. Many M/B's have 3 RAM slots!

In many machines RAM does run in pairs, eg. DDR SDRAM,
but in machines a few years old such as one of mine, it
uses PC133 SDRAM and It does not need to have pairs nor
match, you just need to know what the maximum the
motherboard can handle.

True, but I've always sidestepped mobos that have 3 RAM slots. I normally
go for 4 slots - matched pairs + an easier way to diagnose problems, if they
crop up.

There are some programs that will just kill a WinXP installation. In my case
it was Sony CD Extreme. (ver 1.01.0314) I upgraded from 98SE and soon the
system was corrupt. I then did a clean install (reformat) and upon
installing Sony CD Extreme the same corruption occurred. I had to start over
again. It's been a while but I think the problem had to do with the paging
file. If you have to start over again re-boot several times before you
install any software. Then re-boot after installing any individual software.
Take it slow.

You have then distanced yourself from a series of the best motherboards ever
designed. I am speaking of the NVIDIA based boards, of course. Every
manufacturer has at least one of them in their lineup. Granted - the first
implementation was not all that great. Version 2 got it all together. And
they have gone on from there.

I prefer matched pairs. It's really up to the user's own preference.
