Another licensing question

I bought a laptop on ebay described as having XP installed with a COA. When
I got it, I tried to validate the OS with MS. As you have probably guessed,
MS responded with a message saying that MS did not recognize the installation
as legitimate.

My questions is: Can I buy an OEM version and use the licence number on it
to legalize the installation on the laptop, or do I have to reinstall from
the OEM CD?

Yes you can. You can do a repair install and enter the new CD key when
prompted.

If you are getting the following error message when attempting to update:

Error Message: The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326904&Product=winxp

You'll have to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP Pro CD and Product Key
that comes with it. (You cannot simply change the Product Key)

If you have become the current owner of the laptop and the
ownership has been transferred to you, including all of the
OEM materials that was sold with it, viz., the OEM Windows
XP cdrom with manuals, and other stuff, and have registered
the change of ownership with the OEM, then try to get a valid
product key number from the OEM. It might be allowed, depending
on the original terms of the original sale and the EULA that
accompanied it.

If the OEM is no longer is existence, a possible work-around
is to use Belarc and use the Product Key that it reports. Most
OEM builders install from an image file and insert an ID that
might not correspond to the COA sticker on laptop.

If both fail, then the other recourses are already discussed.

Still preaching that tired old "buy the most expensive M$ solution
possible" crap, are you?

1. Validation is a terribly flawed "technology". It's been proven, time
and again. I have personally seen several _completely_ valid
installations fail the validation process and have seen many pirated
installs pass it with flying colors.

2. Even _if_ the installed OS is truly "invalid" a generic OEM version
is a much less expensive solution than a "Full Version".

How much M$ stock do you own anyway, Carey?

I don't have anything against Mr. Gates and the only things I hate are
ignorance and arrogance. Yes, I use M$ products because I have to for my
work and I actually _like_ them for the most part. The activation and
validation crap only screws over honest people; the real thieves know
how to steal and get away with it.

If my "mantra" (you appartently don't know what a real mantra is)
bothers you so much then just don't read what I post.

Yes, I have bigger and better things to do but picking on Carey is one
of my minor hobbies, and he deserves it. Don't like it? As they say in

football/Soccer match. the score was 3-2 (England 3 Argentina 2).

This was one of the most entertaining match so far between the two
countries. You might know that rivalries between the two countries goes
back for centuries. In 1982 England went to war with Arentina for the
Falklands Islands. Also, in 1986 Diego Maradona scored one of the most
spectacular goals against England in the World Cup.
