another connection problem

I am running three machines on my network. A desktop running Vista Home
Premium, a desktop running XP (SP2) and a laptop running 2000. Until
yesterday they were all connected through a switch, with shared dial-up for
internet access. I had file sharing and internet access from all machines.

Now the wonderful world of DSL has arrived, and I have installed a router
(Linksys wrt54g) to which my DSL modem is connected. The Vista box connects
to a port on the router, the switch connects to another port on the router, a
printer connects to a port on the router, and the laptop and other desktop
still connect to the switch.

While internet access is fine on all machines, file sharing is not. I can
ping each machine from all of the other by ip address. I cannot ping the
machine connected to the router by name nor can I ping from the machine
connected to the router by name. I can reach a printer connected to the
router from each machine.

The vista machine cannot see either of the other two in the sharing center,
although it can see a dvr running as a service on the other desktop.

One one firewall (Norton 360), password sharing off, guest account enabled
on all machines.

One thing that looks strange is that ipconfig on the vista machine, which is
on the router, shows node type as hybrid, while the others show node type as
mixed.

Any ideas on where to look next would be appreciated.

How to give Permissions are there, too.
If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.
