Annoying internet explorer takeover

I've had this happen multiple times, and it doesn't seem to happen unless I
have my firewall off. Unfortunately, there are a few sites I go to that
won't let u d/l with a firewall. Anyway, that's how I got it. And I'm not
sure exactly what it is. I've run adware and norton, and it's neither a
virus or spyware, and this is what it does:

IE 6 allows you to search from the address bar, which is a very nice
feature, as I can have a home page, and google search from the address bar.
This thing that happens changes the search from google to some unknown
terrible search engine, and the setting to change the autosearch settings in
ie doesn't function any more. This can be easily fixed by going to
www.google.com everytime I want to search, but it pisses me off that ie is
effected by some sort of spyware, and that I can't do any thing about it.

Sorry about the essay, but does anyone know how to fix this problem? Is
this an installed program? If so, how do I find it to get rid of it, it's
not listed any where?

I'd say the vast majority of the posts in
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser
are about such hijackings, Ben. Have a look/see.

Someone (a site) tells you to turn off your firewall, and you LISTEN?
