Ancient motherboard question

Hi,
One of my PC's motherboard has I430TX chipset. The manual
says it supports SDRAM whose speed is 60/66 mhz. Will new
SDRAM availble today work and in what quantities (I'd like
to buy one 256mb module, but 2x 128 is also OK)? The board
supports max. 256mb.

Find the motherboard manual. At boot it prints a BIOS ID number.
Google for that to find the make and model.

If you have the manual, it should list the RAM geometry as well as maximum
size. If it says maximum 256MB, then your maximum size of any one module
might be smaller. And not all 128MB modules are the same. RAM is organized
in rows and columns, like a spreadsheet. If the RAM is too "wide", the
motherboard won't be able to address it. But all this information should be
in the manual. -Dave

Hi,

I've had negative experience with SDRAM 100/133 working with SDRAM 66
correctly. Be very considerate of purchasing anything but the correct mhz
speed for that beast.

256MB PC100 and PC133/100 SDRAM worked fine in a couple of I430TX
chipset mobos I tested, but they ran as slowly as slugs because this
chipset doesn't cache more than 64MB. By PC133/100 I mean memory with
at least eight chips per 128MB, i.e., 16 chips for a 256MB module, but
a few such modules will show only half their capacities because they
contain 32M x 4 chips rather than the usual 16M x 8 chips.
