An unwanted space after every letter

I copied the text of a highly-formatted government pamphlet into Word
2002. I was dismayed to find a blank space after every letter. Short
of manually going through the document letter-by-letter, is there any
way of correcting this?

I also found that normal line ending wasn't applied. When a word was
too long for the right margin, the remaining letters were dropped to the
next line without a hyphen. Can this be fixed?

My guess would be that the font has been changed to MS Mincho or something
similar. MS Mincho is a font used for Japanese, which accounts for the lack
of normal line breaks (since the lines can break anywhere), and I would
guess that the spaces are visual only. If you display nonprinting
characters, I'll bet you won't see a dot in those spaces; there is just
extra space after the letters.

MS Mincho text is not normally spaced out like this, though, so select some
text and go to Format | Font | Character Spacing and see whether it's
expanded.

This is a shot in the dark, but I'd still be willing to bet it's a
font-related issue.
