An unknown error has occurred

I opened up an email today and hit reply. While I was still typing Windows
Mail sent the message. I hit reply again and it did the same thing while I
was still typing. The first message went through, but the second one just
sits in my outbox. Tried to delete it and I got the message "An unknown
error has occurred". Read all these posts up here and none solved my
situation. Now I can't send any mail. Everything just sits in my outbox. Any
suggestions? I'm ready to go buy another Mac.

The only solution at the moment is to nuke the message store and start over.

The easiest way to do this is to rename the Windows Mail folder and when you
restart WinMail it will be regenerated fresh.

So go to Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder and that
will tell you the directory where the database is.

Then either rename that directory (from Windows Mail to WIndows Mail Old) or
move everything out of it to another directory and then restart WinMail and
start over again.

As to permissions problems, if they involve WinMail, then they can be
detected in Event Viewer as access denied errors from ESENT. If you see
those then you need to take ownership of the message store directory and
then reset the permissions.

See my other post on this issue. Just try renaming the two MSMessageStore
files to .oldMSMessageStore and then try starting WinMail.

If you have antivirus software then make sure its not set to scan email, or
just try getting rid of it. Many people are having problems due to McAfee
and others.

I found the path for my mail folder, but when I navigate to find it, there
are some hidden files on my desktop. how do i make them visible? or am i just
looking in the wrong place?

Control Panel | Folder Options | View and allow showing hidden files and
folders and everyone on the planet should uncheck the "hide extentions for
known file types" option. Then you should see it.
If you do check those options you'll see things such as "access denied" if
you try and access old folders that don't exist anymore (such as "My
Documents" and is now Documents). Just ignore those errors.

Calm down a bit, ditch the caps lock key and give up the childish attitude.
Learning to post might be helpful as well.

Apparently you are not alone in this sort of problem but then, not everyone
is seeing it. So trying to find a cause is not easy to do and finding a
solution is not easy as well.

Right now, the best I can tell you is that the database which keeps the
records of what messages are where is having a problem. The solution I'm
going to give you may or may not work. There is no guarantee anywhere in any
shape,form or fashion.

Windows Mail has a newer (to them) form of database. Each email is stored
separately.

Do the following:

1) Open Control Panel then select Folder Options.
a) click on the Views tab
b) Select "Show hidden files and folders"
c) Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
d) click APPLY then OK.
e) Close Control Panel

2) From Windows Mail
a) Click on the Tools menu
b) click on Options
c) click on the Advanced tab
d) click the Maintenance button
e) click the Store Folders button.
f) make a note of the location of the message stores. It will be
something like:
C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail
g) close Windows Mail

3) Open Windows Explorer

When it opens, you will see a small black triangle next to the user account
name. Click it to collapse it.

For the following, the triangle will not appear till you put the mouse over
the element in question.

Move the mouse to the "Computer" line. A triangle will appear, click on it
to expand it.

You should see something like "Local Disk (C:)"

Click on the triangle to expand it.

Locate "Users" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate <username> and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "AppData" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "Local" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.
Locate "Microsoft" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Now, in the right window pane, locate Windows Mail.
Click on it.

In the left window pane, scroll upward till you see "Local Disk (C:)"

Now, in the right window pane, hold them left mouse button down on the
Windows Mail folder.
Drag it to the "Local Disk (C:)" and release the mouse button.
Select MOVE Here.......

Now, this may take a bit to get done, depending upon how much mail is there.
Give it time.

Now, when it's done, create a new folder name Windows Mail to replace the
moved one in the
C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft folder.

Now start Windows Mail.
It will be empty but that's no biggie.

Create a couple of folders in Windows Mail and name them Old Mail, Old
Sent.
Click on the Old Mail folder to open it.

Resize Windows Mail so you can see both Windows Explorer and Windows Mail.

In the Windows Mail folder you will see a Local Folders folder, click the
triangle to expand it.

Locate the Inbox folder.
In this folder you will see a lot of .eml files. These are the old emails.
Drag and drop ONLY the .eml files to the Old Mail folder in Windows Mail.

Do similar for Sent Items to the Old Sent folder.

Now, see if Windows Mail works for you.

You don't pay the salaries of anyone here. We are all unpaid volunteers.

Frankly, I think you'd be better off taking your computer to the Geek Squad
at Best Buy, or your local computer repair store. It requires a certain level
of technical competence to understand and follow the advice given here.

you moved the message store and let it create a new one and e-mail is still
stuck in the Outbox?

G

Gary VanderMolen

I'm not the OP, but I can confirm that I have the same issue
(undeletable message stuck in the Outbox), and moving the
MessageStore file did not fix the problem.

WinMail automatically created a new MessgaeStore the next time
it was started. No improvement, though.

Just the particular folder or the whole thing.

Just the file named WindowsMail.MSMessageStore.
I assume its a file rather than a folder.

That's a file. Try the whole folder(s)
