An unknown error has occurred

I've a clogged Outbox & I can't delete several pieces, each of which has the
same message: Message could not be displayed. Windows mail encountered an
unexpected problem while displaying ....... it suggests low mem or disk
space, which I don't believe is possible for a new Vista user. These messages
appear as the last message making what appears to be a log jam, both in my
Outbox & the Deleted mail folder, there are 6 in the latter. Any ideas?

Just read the replies to posts of the past week and you'll get the drift.

First thing is to remove McAfee or Norton AV and antispam from the computer
if they exist. You may need to visit their website to fully uninstall the
product. Then get something less invasive. There are a number of free
antivirus programs, but with any you have to disable email scanning. See
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

After that, the only solution so far is to wipe out the database. So go to
Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder to find the message
store location. Then move everything under that Windows Mail directory to
another directory. Then restart WinMail and it will open fresh with nothing
in the database. You can then add your accounts and if they work correctly
then you can use File | Import | Messages and choose WinMail format and
point to the directory to which you moved the files.

For the more common versions of Vista, download and install this hotfix,
with
Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

You might as well check if it works under Vista RC1. Although it's labelled
as
for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in other folders. If you don't
know
whether to use the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit
version
first. Certain common antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton
and McAfee, tend to cause this and other problems in Windows Mail, although
seldom immediately, so if you have such a program, remember where to find
the hotfix and hope it will install again if you need it again. A recent
version of
the Trend antivirus program also causes assorted problems in Windows Mail.
