An interesting challenge....

Hi

I am trying to find a way to use Excel to do the following, & have ru
into a challenge in finding a way to do it:

I have a need to create 3 separate lines of text, with the first lin
being 25 characters long only (including spaces), and the second tw
lines being 35 characters wide including spaces. I then need to be abl
to take these lines of text and cut & paste into Notepad.

As an example, I might create the first line:

The cat sat on the mat (This is 22 characters including spaces
and therefore fits within the required 25 spaces maximum characte
length).

The second line of text might be:

The cat sat on the mat with the dog (This is the maximum 3
character length for this line inc spaces between words).

At present I have to write out the lines and count up the character
which is laborious, to ensure I am not exceeding the maximum number o
characters I need per line.

I have tried to use a table in Word, and cannot make the table widt
rigid so that if I exceed the column width, the words will cease o
wrap to indicate the character quota has been exceeded.

I have tried in Excel to do the same (see attached). By specifying th
column width for the designated font, I have found that 35 character
fits when the line of text contains some capitalisation, yet the sam
line of text takes up less character spaces if non capitalised, meanin
that I have an extra letter to fill the box, taking the tota
characters to 36 for the line (To see what I mean, please refer t
'line 2' on the attached file where the first letter of each word i
capitalised. When however I enter the same line of text into the bo
labeled 'line 3', the same uncapitalised text fills only 34 characte
spaces. To fill the box I need 36 characters including spaces, when th
width is meant to be set to 35.

How can I ensure that regardless of whether capitalisation, words o
numbers are uses, the absolute maximum characters per box are thos
specified in the column width? Or is there another way to achieve th
same goal?

As a last query how can I do an automatic count to see how man
characters are being used in each box? (On the attached I have adde
the characters up manually and entered '35' or '36'. Is there a way t
automate this to give an accurate character count including spaces fo
the chosen cell?

Many thanks

Regards

Bil

Thanks, works well.

Any thoughts on the final bit of my query?:
