An inconsistency was encountered in the requested backup file.

After more than 100 successful backups and verification
over the last 1 1/2 years, on September 5 the verify
process was halted with the message "An inconsistency was
encountered in the requested backup file."

I am using the backup program that comes with Windows XP
Pro, an Acom 60gig USB hard drive for storage, and weekly
backup the 2 partitions on my hard drive.

Backups had been successful after previous Windows XP
updates. Therefore, I do not suspect any problems from
Windows updates.

I have contacted McAfee who had me do a scan on September
12 in safe mode under a DOS prompt. This did not correct
the problem.

The problem continues consistently in numerous attempts
to backup and verify after September 5.

My thinking is that I have an unknown and undiscovered
virus that randomly corrupts the backup file since the
verify process always stops at a different file and
rather early(first 1% of the backup file) every time I
try backing up. Thus, I have stopped doing partition
backups and verify in an effort to save the previous
backups from being overwritten with corrupt data.

Where does one go for assistance?

Shit happens. Re-run the backup - it'll probably work this time. If it
doesn't then perhaps your storage device is dying or you need a new USB
cable.
