An error occured while preparing the install drive

OK, I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX660 with 0.75 GB RAM, HD0 = 80GB, HD1 = 250 GB

I've created a 50 GB primary NTFS partition on HD1 (via Partition Magic)
named "Vista". I boot the Vista DVD and get . . .

- Install Now
- Product Key
- Accept License Terms
- Custom Install
- Disk 1 Partition 1 48.8 GB Primary
- Installing Window
- - Winows Setup
- - - An error occured while preparing the install drive
- The installation was canceled

I'd appreciate any tips on what to try next.

I have VMWare Workstation, which I might try if I can't get Vista to install
native, but I'd rather run native.

Did you burn Windows Vista at a low speed on the DVD, 2x recommended? You
could extract the content of the ISO to a folder on the XP drive and launch
setup from there. Did you try booting from the DVD or did you launch setup
from within XP?

A coworker burned the DVD for me. I'll have to ask him what speed he burned
it at.

I booted the DVD.

I tried formatting HD 1 Partition 1 from the Vista installer, but it failed
the first time. I figured maybe Partition Magic was screwing up the
partition so I used Windows Management to delete the partion, recreate and
format it. This time I got

-- Windows Setup
- - - An error occurred while copying Setup files onto your local machine.
- - - Error code is [8007045D].

This happened about 13% into copying files. I rebooted from the DVD and
tried to format the partion from the Vista installer. This time I got

- - - Failed to format the selected partition. [Error: 0x80004005].

Next I created a virtual machine from VMWare and booted the DVD. 13% into
copying files again I got

- - - An error occurred while copying Setup files onto your local machine.
- - - Error code is [8007045D].

If I try copying the DVD ISO image to Windows XP, can I do a clean install
of Vista from XP to my spare partition?
