What do you mean by that last question ? Difference between P4 and AMD64
mounting or differing from other AMD64 mountings ?

P4, Athlon, A64 are different, no? I've never done a P4 and only a couple
of K7s some time ago, but I don't recall them even being the
same as the K8 mounting.

Umm, we're a curious bunch, at least I am... just err, wondering what you
decided to buy.

Sounds like a "plan".;-) Make sure you get the Athlon64 Cool 'n' Quiet
working properly - I just got mine sorted out after thinking it had been
sorta working for 4 months and the difference is night & day. here's a
thread on the subject: http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?threadid=60816 and
I found that I had to enable "Minimal Power Management" in WinXP Power
settings - "Home/Office Desktop" did not do it.

Happens to everybody. I hear that living with embarrassments is a sign of
maturity.:)

decided to buy.

these are what i decided:
1. MSI RS480M2-IL MOTHERBOARD MATX ATI RS480 S939 DDR PCI-E16 3PCI SATA RAID VIDEO
SOUND LAN 1394
with:
AMD ATHLON 64 3000+ PROCESSOR S939 WINCHESTER 1.8GHZ 512K L2 CACHE 90NM RETAIL BOX
(this will be for someone else -- i guess i'll be the 'technical support' so it has to
be good!)

2. ASUS A8V-E DELUXE MOTHERBOARD ATX S939 VIA K8T890 DDR PCI-E16 2PCI-E 3PCI SATA SOUND
WI-FI 1394
with:
AMD ATHLON 64 3000+ PROCESSOR S939 WINCHESTER 1.8GHZ 512K L2 CACHE 90NM RETAIL BOX

and:
3. ASUS P5GDC-V DELUXE MOTHERBOARD LGA775 INTEL 915G DDR2 DDR PCI-E16 2PCI-E 3PCI SATA
VID LAN SOUND
with either:
INTEL PENTIUM 4 P4 530J 3.0GHZ PROCESSOR LGA775 1MB 800MHZ FSB RETAIL BOX
or:
INTEL PENTIUM 4 520 2.8GHZ PROCESSOR LGA775 800FSB 1MB CACHE HT RETAIL BOX
(so not completely decided!)

how do they look?

I've always found Asus & MSI good reliable stuff so all should be good.
I'm sure it'll be interesting to see how they all compare.
