SAN JOSE -- Advanced Micro Devices' chief technical officer tipped the performance of the 64-bit Hammer chip at the Microprocessor Forum on Tuesday.

"The Opteron architecture offers industry-leading performance for enterprise-class servers but at the same time it's a sweet little processor for the desktop," said Fred Weber, AMD's vice-president of engineering for the Computational Products Group.

While discussing how OEMs could best implement multiprocessor systems using the Opteron - the brand name encompassing the "Clawhammer" Opteron processor for the desktop and the "Sledgehammer" processor for servers - Weber also mentioned the performance of Opteron test silicon.

A single Opteron core running at an actual clock speed of 2.0-GHz with registered PC2700 memory yielded a SPECint2000 score of 1202, and a SPECfp2000 score of 1170, Weber said. He did not formally disclose whether the chip was a "Clawhammer" or "Sledgehammer" chip.
WOW! I don't know what to say. If the Clawhammer can perform this well on the desktop, then it'll destroy everything that's currently out there. Current processors don't even come close to this range. Now if only they could deliver them on time...
