Hi, I have a Chaintech 7NIF2 motherboard. The motherboard is Socket A
and the doc says it supports the following processors:

AMD (K7) Duron
AMD Athlon (K7/Thunderbird)
AMD Athlon XP (Palomino/Thoroughbred)
AMD Athlon XP (Barton)

I understand that the Sempron CPU's are Socket A also, does this mean
that a Sempron CPU will work with the Chaintech 7NIF2 motherboard or
does the motherboard and/or BIOS have to explicitly support Sempron CPU's?

Thanks,

jt

Well, I found out that Chaintech's website has a BIOS update that
provides support the Sempron line of AMD processors.

The obvious dumb question is now, do I have to first install a supported
processor and flash the BIOS before installing a Sempron or will I be
able to install the Sempron and flash the BIOS on the first boot?

Thanks,

jt

I would imagine that you will need to install the cpu 'first', but that
hopefully, it should be recognised and allow the machine to boot, but
not as a Sempron until you flash the BIOS.

generally youll want to flash the bios first, because the updated bios will
still support your current CPU.

Rob, I don't yet have a processor. I tried to buy a AMD XP 2800+ Barton
on Ebay. While I'm not officially screwed yet, it's not looking good for
a replacement/return of a DOA Barton that I received.

While my Ebay fiasco is pending, I was looking to purchase a "cheap" CPU
that would let me start building and setting up my system (Mythtv setup)
and replace with the Barton if I ever do actually get a replacement.

I have an older AMD based system, perhaps I'll try to install that
processor and flash the BIOS before buying a low-end Sempron.

Thanks for the post.

I was waiting for someone with actual Sempron experience (which I
don't have)to give an unequivocal answer, but since no one has come
forward, I'm 99% sure it goes like this.

You'll be able to boot up with the Sempron but at incorrect speeds and
PR ID, and you'll be able to flash the BIOS.
