AMD chip and mobo suggestion appreciated

Hi all:

I've been using a home-built P4 system for a while and am thinking about
building a AMD system. My current system is a P4 2.53 with Asus P4P800
SE board (lately, it's becoming unstable or I'm wondering I may need a
major make-over done to it). Apparently I would like my new AMD system
performs better than the current one. I've been doing some research but
still cannot decide which chip and mobo to use. I'm using my PC
basically for everything but mostly it is for gaming. Any suggestion on
chip and mobo?

BTW, any body knows what could cause the image on the screen break up
followed by the hanging of the PC? I use ATI9800 Pro with an Antec 430
power supply.

although i usually use AMD myself and have had no problems...
i'd say that you should just fix your present machine...as a P4 2.53 should
be fine...
looks like you may have a video problem of some type...
are you used the right drivers?
have you tried another video card?

This picture breaking up...first something looks like wavering dotted
line appeared on some part of the screen then spreaded out to cover the
whole screen and everything is wavery and broken down. Sometimes it was
blocks and blocks all over the screen and it hanged. Back then my
Gigabyte SIS chipset mobo couldn't even post so I switched to Asus intel
chipset mobo. Then things became stable for a while till now when the
same problem is happening again. I'm using the 5.2 driver for 9800 Pro
and have taken the side penal of my pc case off. Is it overheat? Power
supply not powerful enough (i also have two HD and two cd/dvd rom
drive)? Things do seem to be stable when I put back my nvidia Ti4200
card on. I'm just puzzled by the happening of that same problem after
the system stayed stable for some time. If it was the video card, then
why would a change of mobo fixed it last time? And, guess what, I've
actually put back the 9800 Pro about an hour ago and so far it appears
fine (when I posted my first posted my I still had the the Ti4200
installed since Wednesday). So, what exactly was wrong? I don't know.

Anyhow, in case it's something else, at least I know what to get if some
major overhaul needs to be done.

It could be that a part of the memory on your video card is
failing. Is it better when you switch to a lower resolution ?
It's probably heat-related, which is not the same as saying
that it's overheated. The memory or another component
may be starting to fail when it reaches a certain temp
threshold.

Its being temporarily stable after the change of mobo
could be due to an extended cooling period, or to
flexing of the card when it was shifted. That could have
affected a minute break inside the chips or at some
solder point on the card. The break could also be at the
card-to-slot contact. Have you cleaned the contacts ?

I now suspect it has to do with heat like you said. I did clean my card
and the contacts. The problem came back on Saturday and the pc hanged. I
rebooted right away and the problem disappeared again. Guess nobody -
including ATI - knows what causes it.

I also did some further research on the net and found that many
ATI9800/9700 owners also had the same problem and some also notices that
after sometime their card "fixed itself".
