Am I suffering from KB940199

I don't have a Infcache.1 in the %Windir%\System32 directory and my
Infcache.1 in %Windir%\inf is constantly getting corrupted!

Most USB devices won't install automatically and I am reduced to deleting
Infcache.1 in %Windir%\inf\Infcache.1 and then manually selecting the device.

I have never recieved the "Windows encountered a problem installing the
driver software for your device. Windows found driver software for your
device but encountered an error while attempting to install it." message
though

Many thanks

After an agonizing hour of searching, I found this solution to getting
USB drives to work on Vista.

Unlike Windows XP, Win Vista lacks the generic drivers for USB
devices.

So the workaround is to copy the XP USB drivers into your Vista
system32\inf folder.

1.Specifically, google for these two winXP files:

usbstor.inf

usbstor.sys

2. download and save them into your windows\system32\inf folder

3. Pop in your device and allow the drivers to be searched manually
and point to the above location.

Presto! The usb device now works fine!

A great step backward from Vista to XP if you ask me!
