Alzip

Anyone familiar with Alzip here. I like its interface. However I dont
know if I have the setting wrong or what but when I use the highest
compression for the ZIP files the comrpessed file is the same size in
megs as all the files are uncompressed..

I like 7-zip compression but you can't drag and drop files into a 7-zip
archive when you want to update and add to an existing compressed file.

Which kind of files are you trying to zip compress? E.g. jpegs hardly
compress much using zip. PDFs and WAVs don't gain much either if you use
zip compression. There will probably be other file formats not suited for
zip compression.

I agree TG.. Depends on what kind of data is being compressed.. if
there is a lot of random data like your example with jpeg, gif or other
waves/mp3...

I use alzip a bunch and it offers a bunch of ways to compress files
from .zip, tgzip, (Great way to compress .html, or text files.) rar and
other compression systems that seem to fail my memory also..

You can use the right click with this all the files you want to
compress (or uncompress.) and a simple menu choice comes up instead of
drag and dropping on to the alzip program window..

I really like ALZip myself. I don't see how you can compress into an
RAR file though.....

You can't. You need WinRAR for that. Software copyright on the
compression algorithm. Note that Phil Katz created the ZIP format
specifically because the creators of the ARC format wouldn't allow
others to use it. The ZIP algorithm was always published and was
allowed to be used by anyone. Now ARC is dead and ZIP is the most
common standard.

For this very reason, I refuse to RAR or ACE anything. It's 7z format
for me.
