does anyone know of a contacts type program that can be substituted for Vista
Calendar? All I want is a straight forward program that allows me to store
and retrieve names, home address, Email address, and some notes on pertinent
information, with out having to cope with the ungodly maze of variation and
options imbedded in Vista Calendar. And most important of all, it sorts
entries by last name by default.

Basic:

MS Outlook, if that's all you're going to do.

Advanced: Act, older copies are ok since newer versions are enterprise
grade. Act is much more sophisticated and relatively easy to use for the
tasks you mentioned. There is also Maximizer but I prefer Act for a
single user.

Act is actually Customer Relationship Management software, you can do
much of the following of it in Outlook but it's easier in Act. Enter
appointments, birthdays or whatever and have it notify you in advance.
Use it to send letters and e-mails (it will tie in to Word if you want),
record your calls, or whatever, the history will recall it all for you.
You can group people, e.g. friends, business, who you send Christmas
cards to, or whatever.

ps I don't sell it, in fact it bugs me that there is no "light" version
now, for most users version 4 from Symantec is fine.

Do mean Windows Contacts, not Calendar?

You can sort Contacts very easily..
In the Contacts folder:
Change the View to "Details".
Right-click on the "Name" column heading, click on "First Name", then click
on "Last Name"
Click on the "Last Name" heading to sort by that, or click on "First Name"
heading to sort by that.

In a Create Mail window:
Click on To:
Click on the "Name" column heading... it cycles thru 4 different sorts

Thanks Dave, I meant Contacts
