Altered spacing when printing documents

Hello.
Sometimes when printing to Adobe or a physical printer the font spacing will
be altered. The altered appearance also shows up on the printed document.
When this occurs, all word documents opened will have altered spacing. The
only solution is to reboot.
Why does word do this, and how can this be prevented?

Word's display is determined by the driver for the currently active printer;
in this case, Word is trying to show you what it thinks the printer will end
up producing, based on the font information coming back from the printer
driver. To fix this for for Acrobat, open the conversion settings dialog and
set it to download all fonts. I suspect that this will fix the problem
across the board, but if not, open the Properties dialogs for your other
printers and check if there's a similar setting.
