Alteranate Network Configuration

I have a laptop at what that is configured with a static IP address.
When I get home I need to run DHCP to access my Broadband connection.
Is it possible to create an alternate configuration and set it to DHCP
to pick up my broadband at home?

Eddie,

Yes. The Alternate Configuration tab in the TCP/IP Properties wizard lets you
put in a static ip address. This will be used when there is no DHCP server.

My thought is that while using broadband at home via the alt.
connection this will not work unless I run ipconfig and grab the IP
information that is being used and set that as my permanent address.

Will this work?

Eddie,

If your primary configuration uses DHCP, and you have a fixed address for use
where there is no DHCP server, this will work. If you're using a fixed address
even though there is a DHCP server (is this at your workplace? don't keep us
guessing), then you will need a configuration manager.

Are you using broadband at home with a router, or directly connecting to the
service?

Absolutely. That's exactly how I have my son's laptop set up. At school
he has a static IP on a subnet that's different from mine at home,
where he gets his dynamic IP from the DHCP server (router). See this
link for instructions:

- Automatic Configuration for Multiple Networks

There will be a slight delay while the original TCP/IP settings time
out. We don't find that to be a problem, but if it turns out you don't
like it you can always use third-party utilities such as:

http://www.globesoft.com/mnm_home.html - MultiNetwork Manager

My primary connection has DHCP but I am using a static address. My
connection at home is through a Router to my Broadband provider.

OK, Eddie,

If you have DHCP at home (and behind a router, good), and you have DHCP at your
primary connection (but choose to use a fixed IP address), then you'll need a
configuration manager, which will let you setup both configurations, and use the
appropriate one at any time.
