Alt-Tab not switching and no icons being displayed

Hi-
I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and when I press Alt-Tab I do not get the
icons on the screen and no window changes focus. I can see the white
highlight changing window boxes on the taskbar but when I release it no
window changes and there is nothing in the main part of the screen. I also
uninstalled the PowerToys Alt-Tab replacement. I would really appreciate any
help anyone might have for this problem. Thanks!

Hi Dan,

Suggestions without knowing more...

It sounds like you have the XP PowerToys installed. If so, go to
Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/Powertoys for XP/Change or Remove.
Uninstall the task switcher.

And/or Go to Start/Run and type in msconfig. Click the Startup tab and
uncheck startup item taskswitch. After restarting your computer, Windows
reverts back to the classic task switcher.

To activate manually: Modify these registry values:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

"CoolSwitch"
"CoolSwitchColumns"
"CoolSwitchRows"

....to reflect how many columns and rows, respectively, you want to appear in
the Alt+Tab cool switch display. That might help.

Thanks for your help but I don't have the Alt-Tab replacement installed
anymore. I had it installed but it wasn't working even with that so I
uninstalled it. I don't see a PowerToys entry either on my Add/Remove
Programs list. Is there anything else I could try? Thank you again, I
really appreciate it.

I figured it out. My laptop had a keyboard mapping utility that had
assigned the alt key as the windows key instead. It is working now.
