ALT + Enter and Wrap Text

Christopher

This issue is driving me nuts! I am using Excel 2002, SP2.

Typing text in a single cell, I've used carriage returns (ALT + Enter
to list items. I then turned off Wrap Text to have each item spread ou
across the adjacent column boundaries (the cells in adjacent columns o
this row are blank). The text, though, is spread out on one long ro
with a symbol indicating where each ALT + Enter was inserted.

When I double-click in the cell to edit the text, the Wrap Text i
automatically turned back on, messing up the formatting for each lin
of text in the cell (each of which should be running across colum
boundaries), but the ALT + Enter commands are obviously retained.

I know that I could merge the first few cells in this row in order t
straighten out the listed items, but want to be able to sort th
spreadsheet and don't like merging cells...

Anyone have help or advice on this

I don't think you can get around the fact that Excel is going to
automatically turn word wrap back on.

Christopher,

There is no hope. Very sorry. For Alt-Enter to work, wrap text must be on.
And when wrap text is on, it will not spill into adjacent cells. Are you
sure you want to list a bunch of items in a single cell? Normally, you list
them in separate rows. Say more about what's in the sheet.

And stay with your instinct not to merge cells - they are evil things put on
this earth to test us!!!!!!!!! :)
