WHY don't you post to the GAME freeware group??????????

Wouldn't that be the polite thing to do?

He (Mark) was very polite creating a script in his spare time that makes
these postings happen. He seems a polite guy in general. Unlike other
people. People that 'shout' in newsgroups. Impolite people. People that
start nagging about a fine effort made by somebody to do something useful.

.....and why did you add the game and discussion groups to your reply ?

Replying to a crosspost is one thing but crossposting a reply to a
regular post is soooo *not* the "polite" thing to do......especially
if you're bitching.

Right, now that I've had my early, early morning rant, I can make some
more coffee and get on with my otherwise laidback life ..........

I don't usually look at acfg, so it was a bit of a fluke that I saw this
posting. You are right, it would probably be better to post it to acfg.
I have written it down as an RFE (Request For Enhancement). The
enhancement you requested is fairly minor, so ought not to take me long
to implement. It's been my experience that the scripts are quite
fragile, so that even seemingly innocuous changes require a period of
testing, debugging and general massaging to get them into a working
form. In the past I have received a lot of flak for creating faulty
postings.

Rest assured, though, that I do intend to implement your request. Expect
it Real Soon Now (TM).

IMHO better to crosspost it to a.c.f and a.c.f.g, with f-u set to
a.c.f.g. Don't you just love conflicting RFEs? ;)

Um, yes, quite magical.

It's probably a good idea for me to post them to both groups, which
keeps everybody happy; except for the people who don't like
cross-posting. This ups the complexity a bit, as I have to rejigger my
code more.

I'm not much of a game-player, although I do like the occasional /good/
game. I find many of the games that are available from the internet to
be disappointing, assuming that they work at all. One site that does
seem well worth a visit, though, is Open Source Gaming:
http://osgaming.net/modules/news/

One game that I'm recently quite into is called Go, the ancient oriental
strategy game. There is a program called Igowin, which is a free version
of Many Faces Of Go:
http://www.smart-games.com/igowin.html

The payware version is stronger, and of course has more whistles and
bells. None of this will really matter if you're just getting into it,
though.

A truly free version is available from GNU software. Setting it up on
Windows is another matter. It's easiest with Linux, and probably
available with many Linux distributions out-of-the-box.

Igowin is excellent. It is quite old but there is still no competition
for it, which is a shame because I assume Go programming has come on a
bit since it was written.
A nice thing about it is that a total beginner can get a perfectly
adequate game out of it and it will provide a competent player with a
bit of a challenge. It graded me 'Professional' once, which i thought
kind. :)

In an age when Chess has been essentially 'solved' by computers, it is
nice to see that no one still has any real idea how to write a serious
Go program.
