Ok, recently..within the last week and a half..I have had to reformat my hard
drive and reinstall Windows XP Professional...due to problems with viruses
and issues I couldn't resolve any other way. I just have one problem...ok
two...I have everything installed correctly, I believe, and it should all be
running smooth...I have all updates installed, except SP2, as I am behind two
firewalls and SP2 tends to cause serious difficulites with connecting to the
internet if I have it installed.
My computer has been freezing up and acting almost like I need some kind of
driver or there might be something wrong with the registry or the actual hard
drive itself. It will run smooth for awhile, a few minutes to a couple hours,
depending on what I'm trying to do, and then it will freeze for a few seconds
to a few minutes...sometimes I have to reboot cause it won't unfreeze...right
now I have hardly any programs installed other than the basics that come with
windows and things like Adobe Acrobat and a number of anti-virus (System
Suite 5, Microsoft Anti-Spyware,Ad-Aware,Spybot Search and Destroy) and
anti-adware/spyware programs. Can anyone tell me why my computer might be
behaving this way? Should I worry about the hard drive itself or might it be
something wrong with how I re-installed windows xp pro ? Thanks in advance
for any help.

Try going to the website of your hard drive manufacturer and see if they
have a hard drive diagnostics utility for download. Most manufacture do.

Thanks for the suggestion...I'll look into it...though I'm not quite sure it
is my hard drive that is the problem at this point...could be but I don't
know...I think I might be having some kind of hardware conflict or software
conflict or something...somehow when reinstalling windows xp pro I must've
made a mistake somehow...I'm also gonna check on the innerworkings of my comp
(tis a home built one) and make sure nothing is amiss with fans on the cpu or
anything...I'm still open for suggestions...something I did try that seemed
to work for a little while was checking the device manager for duplicate
installations of hardware..which there were a few duplicates of USB
controllers...I followed the trouble shooter duplicates of things in device
manager but after I restarted my comp to make sure all would work well after
said changes the duplicates had reappeared so I dunno...in anycase I might
have to have someone with a bigger brain than mine take a look at my comp
soon..
